Gestures of Place combines the distinct approaches of two photographers through quiet, contemplative imagery to capture a profound dialogue between humanity and the ever-shifting temporalities of the landscape. Based in the UK, Scott Hunter is deeply committed to exploring the complex relationships between humans and the environment. His photographic works challenge anthropocentrism by documenting non-human agencies in the natural world. Informed by science, he seeks to convey the interconnectedness of water, soil, rocks, and the living world. With a background in psychotherapy, Australian photographer Robert van Koesveld explores the concept that photographs serve as personal abstractions and responses to reality, encapsulating a moment in time. His exploration of presence and timelessness navigates the intersections between past and present, the personal and archetypal, and the sacred and everyday. Since meeting at KG+ in 2019, the artists recognised parallels between Hunter's scientific and van Koesveld's intuitive approaches worth exploring. Combined, their collaborative works capture the forces that shape our understanding of the world and invite viewers to consider the interconnectedness of all things.
